Kana hummed as she flipped on the light switch and walked into her kitchen through the front door of her apartment in New York City. She looked at the clock, seven thirty at night and it had gotten dark as she had walked home from work. The days seemed to just keep getting longer as she worked her summer job at the book store and café down the street. Soon she wouldn’t have to walk home in the dark at all.
She smiled as she heard meows outside her door. “I’m coming! Give me a moment!” She quickly pulled out ten different bowls out of her cupboards along with a large bag of cat food. She filled the bowls and carried two to the door, opening it to reveal at least fifteen stray cats waiting for their evening meal. Kana smiled, “Come and get it! And remember, no fighting!”
She set down the first two bowls and proceeded to place the other eight outside as well. She smiled again as she watched the cats began to eat. She saw the pairings of the cats, the ones who shared a bowl every time, the mates. She sighed as her mind began to wander into a land of daydreams of finding the perfect man and never being alone again. I wish I had someone like that…
She was shaken from her dreaming by the chime of the grandfather clock in the hall. She sighed and went back inside, leaving the front door open for the cats to come in and shelter for the night if they wished to. She went into her bathroom to take a shower.
As the hot water pattered on her back her mind wandered off again, but this time it was to the mystery of her recent nightmares. They plagued her dreams every night now and she wondered why on earth she would keep having this recurring dream…

She’s running as fast as she can, but it’s still not fast enough to loose him. She just couldn’t get away, his breath was still against her neck. She tried to dodge in a zigzag pattern through the trees, but he still pursued her. She could see his terrifying grin in her mind, but she didn’t dare look back at him. All she could think of was the fangs that flashed in the moonlight as he had smiled at her.
“Oh come on Kana, you know you can’t escape.”

Kana woke up with a start and was immediately brought to her senses by the hot water and the steam that was nearly suffocating her. It had just been the dream again, the relief that flooded her body made her let out a strange, strangled laugh. She turned off the shower and stepped out, drying herself off and wrapping her towel around her body so she could walk from the bathroom to her bedroom to get dressed.
As she left the bathroom she looked into the living room, and screamed as she saw a man standing in the middle of the room. He had been standing there and looking around until he turned to look at her. She blushed and turned to run, dashing into her bedroom. She slammed the door and locked it, breathing hard.
“Oh my god, oh my god. This it NOT good. Oh why did I choose to live alone?” I’m going to die at twenty, not even old enough to drink yet. She was startled as he knocked softly on her door and she backed away from it.
“Get away!”
“Hey, calm down for a moment, will you?” She heard him sigh, “I’m sorry I walked in, but seeing the strays outside I figured I might find some hospitality here. I promise I won’t hurt you, I swear.”
“I’m sure that’s what they all say!” Despite her fear, she began to get dressed. If he was telling the truth she wasn’t going to talk to him in a towel. She quickly found a dark gray tank and pulled it on along with underwear and a pair of jeans.
“Look, if I really wanted to hurt you,” the lock clicked and the door swung open, “I would have already.” He flashed a smile that made Kana’s heart beat faster, but she shook it off. He could be trying to kill her! She took a look at him, he sure looked suspicious with that dark trench coat and combat boots. Only his light blue gaze looked friendly and kind, sparkling with laughter at her aloof attitude.
“Fine, but I’m not afraid to fight back, got it?” She realized that now her only choice was to listen to him. “What do you want?”
The stranger chuckled, “A place to crash for the night, what else?”
“Fine, you can have the couch. I’ll just go to bed early tonight instead of watching the late night movie. She pushed past him to break up a fight between the strays outside.
“I’ll watch that with you. I haven’t watched TV in a while.” The stranger followed her out to the kitchen, his eyes roaming down her body without her knowledge.
“Or taken a shower, here,” She thrust a towel at him, “Go take a shower, I think you know where the bathroom is. You can use my shampoo and stuff.”
“Yes Ma’m.” Kana looked back to watch the stranger walk away to the bathroom. She turned and went outside to bravely stick her foot in between the brawling cats. Yeah, she could get scratched, but it didn’t really hurt if she ignored it. This time the cats jumped back and looked at her.
“I said no fighting sweeties.” She smiled and sat down on the step with the cats. One female tabby leapt into her lap and began to purr as she stroked the dirty fur. Her mind began to wander about the stranger who had just entered her home.
“I didn’t even ask for his name.” She sighed.
“It’s Vincent.” Vincent laughed as Kana snapped her head around to look at him. She saw that his hair was down and wet.
“That was fast… or was I spaced out for that long?”
“You were spaced out.”
“Right, of course. I always am.” She stood and walked back inside turning to say to the cats, “Last call, in or out?” Her question was answered as all the cats darted inside as rain began to fall down. Kana laughed and closed the door, pausing as she saw Vincent’s eyes dark with confusion and anger.
“What?” She placed her hands on her hips.
“Nothing. Doesn’t your movie start soon?”
“Oh yeah!” Kana went into the living room, grabbed the remote and plopped down onto the couch, turning on the TV and changing it to the movie of the night. She blushed to see that it was a romance movie. Great, just what I need. She thought sarcastically.
Rain pattered on the window as Kana sat back and enjoyed the movie, stealing glances at Vincent as he sat next to her. She soon forgot about him as she was pulled into the movie. She didn’t notice his arm across the back of the couch and behind her until a commercial hit. She turned to him and raised an eyebrow.
“What?” He gave her a curious look.
“That’s a cheesy pick up trick.”
“What is?”
“Nothing. Forget I said anything.” Kana sighed, she was over reacting. He was probably just more comfortable that way. She turned back to the movie to watch as it came on again.
She was suddenly pulled across the couch as a strong arm wrapped itself around her, pressing her close to Vincent. She began to squirm, but he just held her tighter.
“Pretend you like it, you know it’s true deep down under that hard surface of yours.” He smiled at her, again making her heart beat faster. She huffed and stopped squirming, trying her best to watch the movie. She relaxed as she was pulled back into the play of events in the movie and forgot about the arm around her shoulders.
As the movie wound to the end Kana's eyes wandered out the window and she screamed at what she saw, but it was quickly cut off by a hand over her mouth.
“Crap, now he knows you’ve seen him.” Kana looked up at Vincent and saw that his eyes were narrowed at the man standing outside her window and looking in at them. She turned to see the figure step closer and her eyes widened and she began to tremble. It was the vampire from her dreams. She saw it grin, its fangs gleaming. Vincent gave her an urgent look and let go of her mouth, standing up to face the vampire and pulling Kana up with him to push her behind him.
“Stay behind me and everything will be fine.”
Kana watched in horror as the vampire placed a hand on her window and the glass shattered, falling onto the floor. He stepped into the room and looked at Vincent protecting Kana.
“Hello there Kana, I’m so glad I have found you. Tracking you using the dream world is very difficult when you run away.” The vampire grinned and took a step forward, but went no further as a silver flash in front of Vincent revealed a sliver bladed sword.
“Now, now. No need to get fussy boy. I’m not here to kill you, I just want her. I smelled her blood in the park months ago and now that I’ve found her, I must have it.”
“Well you’ll have to get through me first, Kent.” Kana looked up with surprise as Vincent vowed to protect her and he obviously knew this vampire. He had only just walked into her home and now he was defending her.
“Why?”
“I had been following Kent for a while, waiting for a chance to destroy him after he killed a friend of mine. I saw he took an interest in you that day in the park when you scraped your arm so I made it my mission to keep you safe. I’ve been following you at a distance, sorry about that, and I grew attached. I can’t let Kent have you now.” Vincent turned and smiled at Kana, but that was a mistake.
Kent grinned and dashed at Vincent with inhuman speed, his hands turning into claws as he struck out at Vincent’s sword arm. Vincent dodged the attack just barely and kicked out with his foot, smiling as it connected with Kent’s chest. Kent was sent flying backwards and skidded to a halt.
“Oh, this is going to be fun. But can you beat me while protecting her? I think not.” Kent struck at Vincent’s side, the one he was using as a shield to protect Kana. Kent grinned as Vincent didn’t move and took the blow to his arm, not flinching as he kicked out again. This time Kent dodged the kick and leapt back.
“Why don’t you use your sword? Are you afraid you’ll hurt me?” Kent cackled manically. Vincent ignored the taunt and turned to Kana.
“As soon as I attack him, you make a run for it.” Vincent gave Kana a reassuring ssmile, “I’ll follow as soon as I finish him. I just don’t want you to have to watch me do this.”
Kana nodded as she readied herself to run for her life. She remembered the decorative katana she had gotten for Christmas from her dad; it was hanging on the wall in the kitchen. That’s convenient. She watched Vincent dash at Kent and as the two clashed she took off running towards the front door. She grabbed the katana off the wall and opened the front door, slipping out quietly into the rain, leaving the door hanging open.
As Vincent and Kent fought, cats began to stream out into the rain even though they didn’t quite like it. They followed their friend as she ran down the sidewalk, staying in the shadows and running across the roof tops. Their number grew to at least thirty as other stray cats joined the cause.
“Fool!” Kent snarled as he realized that Kana had escaped. “You’ve doomed her to my will! No one can outrun a vampire!”
“Not if that vampire,” Vincent slashed at the vampire’s foot with his silver blade, “is injured.”
Kent snarled as he felt the bite of the blade in his calve and kicked out, sending Vincent careening across the room and crashing into the wall. The vampire glared at his opponent as he saw the man lying there, blood dripping down his forehead. Kent didn’t stop to make sure Vincent was dead as he slipped through the door to pursue his prize.
Kana ran into Central Park, the katana clasped to her chest as she clambered through the trees and she found a place hidden among the foliage. She sank down under a tree and leaned against it, trembling in fear for both her and Vincent.
I grew attached.
His words echoed in Kana’s mind and though he had startled her and invaded her space, she didn’t want Vincent to get hurt. She already considered him her friend, no, maybe more than a friend. She sighed as the rain fell down and pattered against her face, calming her slightly. She closed her eyes as she rested her hands and the katana in her lap. All around her the cats positioned themselves up in the trees and under the bushes, hidden from view by the full summer leaves.
Kent smiled as he followed Kana’s scent to the little clearing and stepped forward until he loomed over Kana.
“Oh come on Kana, you know you can’t escape.” Kana gasped and her eyes flew open to see the vampire who had haunted her dreams grinning down at her. She screamed as he roughly grabbed her arm and pulled her to her feet. He pulled her to him and held her tightly with both arms so she couldn’t struggle. She shivered as he whispered into her ear, “Don’t worry, this won’t hurt at all.”
Kana couldn’t move to defend herself and she shut her eyes tightly and turned her face to the side she couldn’t feel his breath on her cheek anymore. Instead she felt his cold breath on her neck as his fangs grazed her skin…
And with a yowl the strays of the city attacked the vampire, biting and scratching with the ferocity of the miniature tigers they were. Kent hissed as he was attacked and he fell back, letting Kana go as he tried to shake off the felines.
Kana took off through the park again, heading back toward her house. She knew it was stupid, but she had to know that Vincent was okay. As the rain fell harder she saw Vincent limping towards Central Park.
“Vincent!” She ran to him and she smiled to see him look up and wave. “The cats, they-“
“Couldn’t have stopped me if hey were tigers.” Kent grabbed Kana and pulled her towards him again, “Oh now sweet, your beloved Vincent gets to watch you die.”
Kana cried out and tried to struggle as she felt Kent’s breath on her neck again. She looked up to see Vincent running towards them.
“No! Kana!” She heard his call, but he was too late. She closed her eyes tightly as she felt Kent’s fangs pierce the fragile skin of her neck. A tear fell down her cheek as she felt life begin to drain out of her and she opened her eyes again to look at Vincent one last time, but he was gone.
Suddenly she felt Kent’s hold on her fail and she dropped to the ground, the world spinning as she felt lightheaded from the loss of blood. She saw Kent fall by her, his eyes dark and lifeless. She was confused, her mind unable to put together what had just happened, until she saw Vincent’s knee by her and felt his arms wrapping around her.
“You saved me.”
“Just in time, too.” Kana looked up to see Vincent smiling weakly, the dried blood trailing down his face being washed away by the rain. She nodded as she leaned into his warm embrace, happy just to be there in his arms. She smiled as he kissed her on the forehead and lifted her up to carry her home, leaving Kent’s body to melt away into dust.
Just in time…
